Best Ways To Store Ginger For Freshness

Storing food for freshness and strength of flavor can help you to save money and have quality ingredients to hand every day.

The best ways to store ginger for strength of flavor is in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator, either peeled as a whole root. You can shred the ginger and pop into ice cube trays fill with water and freeze for up to 6 months. You have also got the choice to crystalize ginger in syrup and store in airtight containers.

Ginger is a useful root to have on hand, not least because of it’s health giving properties. Perfect for full on pungent flavors and a great addition to any fresh curry. We use ginger in our hot drinks in the Winter to try and stave off a cold or in our bright and fresh Summer cocktails.

Storing Fresh Ginger

Fresh ginger needs to be stored for freshness, flavor and texture. You can store it in the refrigerator in an airtight bag for around 3 months, but for longevity store in the freezer.

How To Store Fresh Ginger In The Fridge

You can store fresh ginger in the fridge whole as a root or peeled and sliced. The main thing is that you use a zip lock bag and ensure it is sealed. I use the crisper and this means the ginger is easy to hand.

This is ideal for when you have a bit too much ginger left over that you have bought. However if you have grated or peeled too much for a dish you may want to freeze it down.

How To Store Fresh Ginger In The Freezer

Storing fresh ginger in the freezer can be as easy as popping the root into an airtight bag. Then you can peel and grate it easily when still frozen. Alternatively if you have prepared too much fresh ginger, then you can pop the sliced or shredded ginger into ice cube trays. Fill with water and then freeze for up to 6 months.

If I am honest I like to store fresh ginger in the freezer once I have batch prepared it. This saves me time and money as I have a fresh ingredient ready to hand at all times.

How To Store Dried Ginger

Storing dried herbs and spices needs to be done in a cool, dark place. An airtight container is ideal for retaining flavor and stopping cross contamination. You often see spice racks that are in direct sunlight, and although they are good for easy access to your ingredients the direct sunlight will speed up the ageing process.

This means that there is a premature reduction in flavor. When we say that a dried spice has gone out of date, this is invariably what we mean. Dried spices do not tend to develop mold without the introduction of moisture so airtight, in the dark and in a cool environment works well.

Alternative Ways To Store Ginger

If you have fresh ginger you can use a dehydrator to dry it out and save as ground ginger. Alternatively you can use syrup and make sugared ginger. One of our favorite uses is crystalized ginger and then we take a little pot on long car journeys.

Reducing food waste will help to reduce our food miles and just as importantly save our pocket. Fresh ingredients are a real luxury and growing your own can also be a great way to ensure you have plenty to hand!
